Sectional Champions

Coach George Girardi. Sixth place in the State Class “A” Wrestling Tournament. Dan Murphy the state title at 132 pounds and had a season record of 31-1-0. Brother Don captured first at 138 pounds and ended the season with a 32-0-1 record. It was the first time in Illinois competition that brothers shared victory in the State Wrestling Tournament.

Both Murphys were also named Central Illinois’ Outstanding Wrestler in their respective weight classes. Dan and Don were co-MVPs for the season.
Wrestlers who placed in the District meet were Don Murphy (138) —1st, Dan Murphy (132)—1st, Bill Funk (126)-1st, Tim Hutson (155) —2nd, Darvin Miller (145)—2nd, John Funk (119)-1st, Mike Armes (167)-2nd, and Ron Biddle (105)- 2nd.
Wrestlers who placed in the Sectional meet were Don Murphy—1st, Dan Murphy-lst, Bill Funk-lst, Tim Hutson-3rd, John Funk-4th, Mike Armes-4th, and Ron Biddle-3rd.
Wrestlers who took places in the Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament were Don Murphy—1st, Dan Murphy—1st, Bill Funk—2nd, Tim Hutson-3rd, Darvin Miller- 3rd, and Mike Armes-3rd.
Dan Murphy, Don Murphy, and Bill Funk (25-4-1) were tri-captains for the 1973-74 season.
